Why you have to make your own ping pong table

Usually, the price range for a table tennis table in the market varies from $100 to more than $2000 depends on the material and the design.

A table tennis table would cost more due to the fact that the thickness of the tabletop affects the performance of the game tremendously. The rest of the cost is the exotic style and design. So, if you only want a quality table with a simple design, making your table tennis would save you tons of money.

Wood sheet for a table

The only thing you need to consider is the type of wood. A standard tabletop would be made of Plywood or MDF wood.

You can find Plywood in different types of materials like pine, spruce, or fir. They are softwood which is beneficial to the bounce of the ball. You can also find hardwood plywood in some table tennis, but it is unnecessary for home usage as it is used for competitions mostly.

Some people may recommend you cherry wood. However, it is not as sturdy as Plywood to offer you a good bounce.

Materials that make up the standard tabletop for table tennis

MDF or medium-density fiberboard is another type of material that is used in high-end professional ping pong tables. This material has a higher price than Plywood because of its additive features such as waterproof, anti-deformation, and high technology manufacturing that maximize the bounce of the ball.

When buying Plywood or MDF material for your top, it is important to know the appropriate thickness of the material. As mentioned above, the thickness of the tabletop will determine the performance of the game, so you need to find a decent sheet with a thickness of more than 19mm.

For Plywood, you can usually find the sheet at 20, 25, and 30mm thickness. As Plywood can be warped and blistered, it is recommended that you choose a table of 25 to 30mm in thickness to strengthen the durability of the table.

Regarding the MDF material, the market thickness for this thickness is around 18 to 25mm. However, because of the technology advantage, the effect on the ball is persistent no matter the thickness of the material.

Now that we pass the material selection part, let’s get into our step-by-step guide on how to make it.

Step 1: Overall dimension

A standard this is 9 feet in length, 5 feet in width, and 30 inches in height. In the meantime, a mini table would be 6 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Plywood sheets are not at the size of a standard so you can get a sheet 8 feet in length and 4 feet in width is good enough to play at home.

Prepare pocket screws, wood clues, 29 inches for legs, nails, and let’s get started.

Step 2: Prepare the legs

Measure and find four legs at 29 inches long and 10 inches width. The reason why the height of the legs is 29 inches is due to the standard height (30 inches), leaving 1 inch of the table top’s thickness.

Step 3: Prepare the frame

This needs to be cut into two pieces, every 9 feet long. Then cut another two more pieces at 4 feet and 8 inches in length.

Lay the longer pieces 5 feet apart and put one shorter piece in between them at the top to form a U form. The other short piece will be placed at the bottom to close the frame.

Once you have had the form, drill the guide hole and attach them with screws. Now you will have a standard 9 feet long table frame.

Step 4: Prepare the top

Now, this is an important part of the process. Cut the plywood sheet into 4 pieces, 2 sheets are 4 feet in width and 5 feet in length, 1 sheet is 5 feet in length and 2 feet in width, the last sheet is 5 feet in length and 1 foot in width.

Once having finished cutting them, you need to put together the two larger sheets, 1 inch apart from each other. Then you will need to put the narrower of the other two pieces between them. This will create a piece of 5 feet in width and 9 feet in length.

When using the plywood as your tabletop, you should smoothen the surface out with a belt sander to paint it.

Step 5: Assemble

Now that you have finished preparing all the pieces of a table tennis table, it is time to put them together. Use wood glue, screws, and clamps to attach four legs to the inside of the frame. Then fix the tabletop on top of the frame with the same method.

Step 6: Connect the net

Prepare two bars at the middle of the table and use wood screws to fix the plates of the net to the table. Once you have done that, the only thing left is to buy a net with the length of 6 feet in length and 3 inches in height.

Conclusion

Table tennis is a popular sport game for a family gathering or group activities. That’s why many players tend to have a table at their home instead of going to clubs.
